A plain-language guide Licence

Check a licence

A name you can look up, not just a reassuring badge.

A licence is permission from a state board to practise. Ask for the clinician’s full name and the board that records that permission.

Look up the doctor

Doctors’ licence status and public discipline records are published by state medical boards.

Discipline means action the board has taken against a doctor. The detail available varies by state.

The Federation of State Medical Boards offers a directory with links to its member boards’ websites.

Some states keep separate doctor licence boards, so ask which board holds the record.

Find the relevant state medical board

Find out who would make the medicine

An online service may not make the medicine itself; find out which pharmacy would prepare and send it.

FDA’s page points readers to state searches for pharmacy licences.

Keep the limits in view

A clean public board record does not grade how good a clinician is.

A pharmacy licence shows permission to run the pharmacy. It does not prove that a medicine was made or supplied correctly.

A care service’s licence does not give Selank FDA approval.
